While taking a shower, I think of all kinds of scenarios of how this evening might go. I finally decide that I will just have to go with it. There are too many variables to try to predict anything. I decide to put on some jeans and a rather tight fitting, black, polo shirt. I look good in black, or so I’ve been told. I guess the black loafers will complete the look. Last, but equally important, is a little dab of Versace Man cologne that will enhance my desirability, or at least help me smell good. Done.

I hear voices as I near the family room. It appears everyone is present and having a good chat, except me.

As I enter the room my dad looks at me and says, “Thanks for doing your part for clean air.”

I laugh and take his long-standing joke in stride and reply, “Just want to do my part. Have you all decided what you want on the pizza?”

“Ned already called it in. He said he knows what you like on your pizza. He ordered salad and cheesy bread too. I love cheesy bread! And Ned ordered the new brownie boat for dessert! Chocolate is my favorite!” Nellie says with excitement.

“Great! Thanks, Ned. And you, Squirt,” I say to Nellie, “have already had one great dessert today. I guess today is your lucky day to get to have two. Because of you two I am craving a banana split!”

“I saw them eating it and now I am craving one too.” Ned looks at me and adds, “We decided we could do the ordering for you so that the pizza would get here sooner. Apparently, Ron and Nellie didn’t get full with all that ice cream they ate earlier.”

Meredith and Lacey are sitting on the couch, taking in all the conversation. They look at ease, like they are friends who haven’t seen each other in a while. Hopefully, I can get some chat time in with Meredith too.

While we wait on the pizza delivery we decide to play a game of Pictionary. It’s an old game but always good for a laugh. Meredith is having a good time, everyone is. Her laughter is contagious. She’s a pretty good artist. Her team is winning by a landslide.

“So, Meredith, where did you learn how to draw?” Ned asks. Ned has been unusually quiet tonight, allowing the rest of us to do most of the talking.

Meredith informs us, “I took a couple of art classes in college, basic drawing and painting. My mom tells me I’m a natural but I needed to sharpen my skills; learn some tricks of the trade, so-to-speak. I’ve used my drawing skills in the classroom quite a lot. This really hasn’t been a fair game for you.”

Ned laughs. “Well, I am glad you were on my team!”

“Yes, you got lucky when the straws were drawn for teams,” Lacey smiles at Ned.

“I got lucky years ago on the day I met you, my love,” Ned tells Lacey.
